The Lochside Meadow is in Saanich, near Blenkinsop Creek, and adjacent to an electrical substation operated by BC Hydro. During expansion of the substation, several Garry Oak trees were removed and BC Hydro donated to Peninsula Streams as compensation for their removal. We used this donation to leverage additional support to restore the meadow.
The Challenge
A site survey found little native vegetation and few pollinators. The original topsoil had been removed and the area was primarily covered with invasive grasses.
Our Solution
The meadow was first stripped of all plant and organic material, a service donated by Don Mann Excavating. We then distributed 160 cubic yards of sterile topsoil over site. Saanich Native Plants provided guidance on the selection of plants that attract native bees and other pollinators.
We then invited the community to plant more than 2,000 plants. The restoration work included broadcast seeding of additional native plants and creating vernal pools and cobble mounds to increase plant diversity and bee-nesting habitat. The cobble mounds attracted a garter snake in its first year!
Today, the restored site is a vibrant Garry Oak meadow, providing essential habitat for threatened native pollinators such as butterflies and bees that benefit local gardens and the environment. The meadow is also an aesthetically pleasing and educational community space for nearby residents.
