The spawn is on!

Salmon spotting season is here! 🐟

We're starting to see the first few spawning coho come up the Colquitz River, and this year we're launching something new: a volunteer-led salmon spawner and redd monitoring program! Through weekly walks along the Colquitz River and its tributaries, volunteers will count returning salmon and record the locations of their redds (nests). This information helps us assess the success of past restoration projects and guide future conservation efforts throughout the watershed.

  1. I remember about 10 or so years ago seeing a spawn season of HUGE numbers. I would often head to the fish trap on Colquitz River behind Tillicum Centre and watch in utter fascination at both the size and the number of fish spawning. Since that one year, I haven’t seen anywhere near the number of fish in a single year as I did that one fall. Now it’s that time of year again and I think I’ll take a few days and see how things are going this year because it truly is a beautiful sight to see live, not on video.
